Appearance-wise, the abdominal area is one of the most challenging areas for many men and women today. Whether it’s due to changes after pregnancy, surgery, or simply weight loss and gain, your abdomen may start to stretch out so much that you need skin removal. At Adrien Aiache, MD, in Beverly Hills, California, Dr. Aiache can perform a tummy tuck to remove extra skin and create a smoother abdominal area. A tummy tuck, or abdominoplasty, is a procedure that removes extra abdominal skin and fat, giving you the flat tummy you've always wished for. A tummy tuck can also remove stretch marks. There are two types of tummy tuck available at Adrien Aiache, MD: standard tummy tuck and mini tummy tuck.
The difference between a mini tummy tuck and full tummy tuck is in how much skin and fat removal takes place and where.
A mini tummy tuck focuses on fat and skin removal below the navel. Dr. Aiache also surgically tightens the muscles below your skin in this area. Dr. Aiache makes a single horizontal incision, immediately above the pubic area, for a mini tummy tuck.
A full tummy tuck includes more extensive skin and fat removal, from both above and below the navel. As with a mini tummy tuck, Dr. Aiache surgically tightens the underlying muscles so your skin has the support it needs. The incision is just above the pubic area, and there's also an incision around the navel if necessary.
In general, a mini tummy tuck may be best if you have mild skin sagging, extra skin, and extra fat only below your navel. You need fairly good skin elasticity for a mini tummy tuck.
A full tummy tuck can remove significant amounts of skin and fat from anywhere on the abdomen, both above and below the navel, and is an option even if your skin has virtually no elasticity in that area.
During your evaluation, Dr. Aiache has you stand, sit, and bend over so he can check skin laxity and determine whether a mini or full tummy tuck is best for you.
Sometimes, but not always. Liposuction removes fat but not extra skin. Therefore, if your only problem is extra fat around your belly and your skin elasticity is excellent, Dr. Aiache may recommend liposuction as a tummy tuck alternative.
Tummy tuck recovery time can vary. For a full tummy tuck, most patients return to work within two weeks, and with a mini tummy tuck, it can be faster.
You'll wear a compression garment for at least several weeks to help the swelling go down. Dr. Aiache advises you about resuming more strenuous exercise like sit-ups, which usually takes around three months.
