Liposuction Q & A

What is liposuction?

Liposuction is the surgical removal of extra fat. During liposuction, Dr. Aiache suctions the unwanted fat out of your body. Liposuction is a surgical procedure that requires anesthesia. Most patients have general anesthesia, which means sleeping through the surgery. However, you can have local anesthesia, in which you're awake but not in pain, if you prefer.

Where can I get liposuction?

Liposuction surgery removes fat from many different areas of the body. The most common areas for liposuction are:

  • Thighs
  • Buttocks
  • Hips
  • Abdomen
  • Face
  • Neck
  • Upper arms

Whether it's a small fat deposit or a large one, liposuction is a highly effective way to extract that extra fat.

Am I a good candidate for liposuction?

Liposuction candidates should have two main qualities:

  • Excess fat in certain problem areas
  • Good skin elasticity

You need good skin elasticity because your skin has to bounce back once the fat is gone. If your skin elasticity is poor, your skin could look crepey or rippled in the treatment areas after liposuction.

Liposuction doesn't remove skin, only fat. If you have poor skin elasticity, or if extra skin is part of the issue, Dr. Aiache may recommend another procedure such as thigh lift to help you get the results you want.

What is the recovery like after liposuction?

Recovery can vary based on how much fat Dr. Aiache removes, but the majority of liposuction patients are back to their regular routine including work within around two weeks. However, Dr. Aiache generally restricts heavy activity for at least six weeks after liposuction surgery.

What if I gain weight after liposuction?

Because the fat is actually suctioned out, the fat cells are permanently removed. That means your fat cells won't come back in the same area, but the areas nearby are still vulnerable to expansion.

After liposuction, it's very important to make an ongoing effort to maintain a healthy weight through diet and regular exercise. Once you see your beautiful results, that can be the motivation you need to maintain them for the long term.
