A facelift is a surgery that rejuvenates the middle and lower parts of your face. A facelift deals with problems like sagging skin, wrinkles, and etched-in lines in your cheeks. Sometimes, a facelift is combined with a brow lift, which corrects problems in your forehead area, or with a neck lift, which tightens and smooths your neck area.
Most facelift candidates are in their 40s or older. If you're unhappy with sagging, wrinkling, and aging skin in the bottom two-thirds of your face, a facelift might be a good choice.
If you're tired of short-term solutions and want something that lasts for years, a facelift might be perfect. You do need to be in good overall health for a facelift. Dr. Aiache discusses your medical history with you to make sure you're a good fit for this procedure before you move ahead.
You'll typically be under general anesthesia for a facelift, which means you'll sleep for the whole procedure. Dr. Aiache makes an incision at the hairline in the "sideburn" area. The incision then curves behind the ear and ends around the jaw hinge area. Sometimes, Dr. Aiache may make additional incisions below your eyelids to more effectively tighten the central face if necessary.
Dr. Aiache then elevates and tightens the superficial muscular aponeurotic system (SMAS) below your skin. By lifting the SMAS, your face has improved support structure to help you maintain the skin changes.
Dr. Aiache then trims extra skin, removes excess fat, and repositions skin. Finally, he makes small sutures to close the incision and covers the incisions with bandages.
For the first few days, be extra-careful to keep your head elevated while recovering at home. Take all of your medication on time, and in exactly the way Dr. Aiache recommends to stay ahead of the pain. Cold compresses can also help with swelling and pain.
You'll usually visit Dr. Aiache at around a week post-surgery to get your sutures removed. Generally, patients take around two weeks off after a facelift and then resume most normal routines including work. However, Dr. Aiache usually prohibits strenuous activity for at least six weeks after a facelift.
