WEIGHT LOSS CONTROL CENTER

At the Weight Loss Control Center, the patients are usually treated by a conservative approach first consisting of diet and medication to cut the appetite, followed eventually by surgery if the treatment has not been completely successful. The surgical treatment consists of four different techniques which are used depending on the patient. These treatments are done through a tiny incision in the abdomen and consistent of bypass of the food to make it less absorbed in the body, and shaving of the stomach to make
it smaller and able to accept a large amount of food. These treatments are usually successful and we result in a large amount of weight loss on patients who are at risk with obesity of having all kinds of problems including heart attacks, adrenal problems, and general condition problems related to obesity.

TREATMENT OF OVERWEIGHT PATIENTS

The treatment of overweight patients can be medical, consisting of medication to cut the appetite of the patient and other medications to promote an activation of the metabolism. However, these treatments are often not followed by a good response and surgical treatments have been devised.
The surgical treatments consist of:
1. A lap band, which is a technique where through tiny incisions in the abdomen, a belt is applied around the stomach thus making it smaller and unable to take in as much food as before the surgery. This treatment is successful in many ways and ends up with a large amount of weight loss on the patients.
One of the only problems is that, occasionally the band will slip and will need to be readjusted, and in some patients it is completely removed in a secondary procedure.
2. The second treatment consists of a gastric bucket, which is a technique where the stomach is divided into two areas, a smaller part for the intake of food and a second part is removed. It is usually from the posterior aspect of the stomach.
3. The third treatment consists of a gastric bypass, which is a surgery where the bowel is connected
at a lower part of the intestine just by passing a large amount of small bowel which absorbs the food.
The result of this surgery is a shorter bypass of the food thus, less food is absorbed and less weight is gained.
These treatments are usually performed either in the hospital or in an outpatient surgery center.
They are often covered by insurance if the insurance company is aware of the fact that the patient has tried many medical treatments, which have been unsuccessful, and is resorting to surgical treatment for success.
